brought a friend to the famous tiong bahru market for lunch as she wanted to go somewhere with good food, and she wanted to try those stuff dat i blogged about. so i brought her there, and ordered a number of stuff to share. after the delicious lor mee dat i blogged abt sumtime back, we also tried the porridge stall dat was featured in TV (pic above). had the pork porridge and the yu sheng (raw fish slices/sashimi-chinese-style). the pork porridge was not bad, the porridge isnt too lumpy nor is it too watery, as the host had commented, it was of a pretty gd consistency. it was pretty flavourful too, with lean pork slices, pork balls, liver and minced pork in it ( couldnt see very clearly from the pic, sorry!), quite a chokeful of ingredients eh! the yu sheng was reported to be really fresh, so we had to have a plate! it defintely didnt fail us. the raw fish slices came with lots of accompaniments like ginger strips, cut chilli, lettuce strips and half a lime. and it was drizzled with a slightly salty and tangy sauce which i couldnt really tell wat it was made of (was guessing sesame oil, lime juice and dunno wat else). even my friend who have never dared to try sashimi couldnt resist trying a piece, and she liked it! because there was no fishy smell dat always puts pple off, and it isnt sliced too thickly. however, a downside is dat some of the slightly bigger slices came with a little bit of bone fragments, which can get a little irritating. other den dat, pretty nice!
well, after all the food, my friend was craving for a cold dessert, so i recommended her this ice cream ice kachang from 1 of the better dessert stalls there. pretty unusual combi huh? i didnt try it, so couldnt really comment, but my friend said it was not bad. there were alot of "goodies" underneath the mountain like corn, red beans, chin chow cubes, jelly cubes and i cant remember wat else. all for $2!
well, since i travelled all the way there, i had to buy sum food bk home rite? so at dad's request, bought bk 8 pieces of Jian Bo Shui Kueh which was reputed to be quite good too. the shui (chwee) kueh was pretty smooth, even though i only get to eat it when it was quite cool already. the fried radish (chye poh) wasnt too oily too, and the portions were rather sufficient, not too stingy. and the chilli packs a punch man!

other den the chwee kueh, bought bk some snacks from the Xi De Li snack stall there too. featured above is the "butterfly", curry puff and hum chin peng (clockwise from left). didnt managed to try the "butterfly" coz was snapped up by the time i started looking for it at home, so couldnt comment much. the curry puff was pretty average though, was filled mainly with lots of curry potatoes, dats abt it, stuff u can find in alot of places. the hum chin peng was pretty ok too, maybe its becoz i only ate it the next day, after microwaving it after taking it out of the fridge, so it was a little hard. shld try it fresh next time.

Prices:
porridge-$3
yu sheng-$4 for small portion
ice cream ice kachang-$2
chwee kueh-$2.30 for 8 (becoz i requested the chye poh to be separated)
"butterfly"-$1.50 (i tink)
hum chin peng-$1.50 (i tink)
curry puff-$2 for 3

went with a friend to Sketches Pasta and Wine Bar at bugis for some better quality pasta den pastamania. the 1 thing that is unique abt Sketches, is dat they have this design-your-own-pasta thing, where they give u various choices of sizes, pasta type, sauces, toppings, additions, etc. all u have to do is tick the choices u wan, and voila! u get ur own personal pasta! so since we went all the way there, of coz muz try it right? so both of us designed our own pasta which, as u can see from the pics, look prety much alike. lol. mine was a tri-coloured fusilli with marinara sauce and topped with chicken, ham, mushrooms, carrots and baby clams (top pic). hers was a spaghetti with marinara sauce too and topped with chicken, mushrooms, baby clams, garlic and sumting else (2nd pic). we both agreed that the sauce wasnt too watery and pretty dense, which is pretty fine with us. they were not very stingy with the ingredients, but prob coz the portion ain't very big anyway. the squids in the marinara sauce were not too rubbery or hard, and the prawns were pretty fresh too. and another gd thing abt this place is dat if u ask for ice water, they will give u a whole jug of it without extra charge! but i guess its becoz u have to pay service tax, gst and prevailing government taxes too. well, all these for $10.50+++ per person. pretty reasonable for small-medium eaters, coz portions ain't very big. the bigger size one is $11.90+++ i tink.

before having my yummy bowl of laksa, walked past this bakery shop selling freshly homemade buns and muffins. walked in to have a look, hoping to find sumting unusual, but the buns didnt really interest me. but when i walked out, i saw a whole display of muffins at the entrance! flavours are pretty unique too, with choc ones and butter ones and others. well, being a choc lover, i snapped up 3 choc types, 1 choc blueberry, 1 oreo and 1 choc chip, coz they were selling at 3 for $3 mah. other den these 3, there r other flavours like white choc chip, mixed fruits, etc.
saved those 3 till i reached home for supper. b4 i ate them, i popped them in the microwave for abt 20 secs, coz hey, hot muffins are always nicer rite? but i guess i was too excited abt trying them, dat i forgot to take pics of it! hehe. but i would say it wasnt totally wat i expected though. the muffins were pretty soft and fluffy, and not very dry, but the 3 choc muffins are very suspiciously using the same batter?? the only diff is dat 1 has abit of blueberry topping embedded in the top, the oreo 1 has a few tiny pieces of oreo on the top and the choc chip 1 has, well u guessed it, some choc chips on the top! so i basically felt like i m eating 3 of the same muffins! shrugz. shld have mixed and matched flavours next time round. but overall, not bad.

guess u all heard abt the famous Katong laksa "battle", 3 stalls claiming to be the original Katong laksa all located 1 next to each other! wanted to try all 3 of them to compare, but didnt have the time and stomach to, so shall start with the 1 in the middle, 328 Katong laksa. This is the branch my ex used to bring me go, so i guess kinda got used to eating here.

Back to the food, i muz say this branch serves up a pretty not bad bowl of laksa. For $3, u got laksa noodles which are finely cut up so dat u can eat them with only a spoon, abt 6-8 medium cockles(some lousy laksa stalls only gives little tiny ones!), 3-4 fresh prawns(cooked of coz, duh!) and the usual stuff like fish cakes, beansprouts, blah. the gravy is lemak enough, without making pple feel too je lat after drking it(there are pple who actually slurp up the whole bowl of gravy lah!), and the belacan-like chilli dat is provided on the table is supposed to be damn good too, but too bad i cant really eat spicy food. those who can take it, shld try it 1 day, juz a spoonful of it in the laksa, and i tink u wun regret man! the otak otak is supposed to be pretty good too, but i didnt have it dat day, so no pics.

when i get to try the other 2 stalls, will blog abt it again.
