Saturday, March 25, 2006 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() pictures pictures pictures! went to Nomin Restaurant for my birthday lunch few wks back...its this restaurant that is famous for its CPF (crab, prawns, frog legs) dish dat was featured in tv... wanted to go n try it, but it was pretty ex...$48 for 4 supposedly, but i think they mean 4 SMALL eaters...so to save $$, we decided to skip dat dish n try the others. gotta apologise 4 the order of the pics 1st....somehow, i couldnt insert the pics in between my text so i have to put them all in front 1st (help?!) 1st dish we tried was the sweet and sour pork (1st pic), more commonly known as 'kou loh yoke' in cze char restaurants....its basically pieces of pork cubes which r normally fried 1st, b4 adding a sweet & sour sauce to it n some cucumber and pineapple cubes....this 1 was so-so only...meat wasn't tough, but not very tender too...abit on the dry side....sauce was ok...more sour den sweet though.... 2nd dish dat came was the venison with ginger and spring onion (2nd pic)...this was not bad as the venison meat was very tender and the sauce complemented it well enuff...the ginger & spring onion oso helped to remove the raw meaty smell...quite a nice dish to eat with plain rice. 3rd dish was a bowl of frog leg's soup (3rd pic)...although it was a tad bit expensive ($9 for a small bowl), the soup was very delicious and made of stock and chinese herbs....and the frog legs were cooked long enough such that the meat comes off easily but yet not too rubbery....but prob its slightly tougher den other better restaurants....prob its the age of the frogs they use? but overall, the soup is pretty nourishing.... the next dish was also frog legs, but fried in butter instead (4th pic)....my guess is that they marinated the frog legs b4 deep frying them, which ensure that they have some flavour to it.....its very crispy and not overfried...in fact, the meat comes off slightly easier than that of the frog legs in the previous dish....this way of cooking frog legs is not commonly found in cze char restaurants so its a pretty nice attempt....1 sad thing is that they didnt come up with a special sauce to go w the legs other than the usual chilli or ketchup though... lastly, we finished it off with a plate of fried rice (5th pic)...although we had hoped the fried rice came earlier so we could eat it with the dishes....nothing very special about it....not much difference from the usual fried rice we get at cze char restaurants....with the usual beansprouts, lettuce, char siew, pork, egg and tiny prawns..... after the meal, we walked a few doors away to the emicakes shop to get some durian cakes (last pic)....after browsing and drooling at all the available cakes, we chose a durian crepe, durian custard, a box of durian puffs, a mini mango cake and a mini choc banana cake (clockwise from left)....other den the custard, all of them are pretty nice and 'durian-ny'....the cakes were very creamy, the choc banana had a very thick choc mousse in it, but only a miserable amount of banana...the custard, on the other hand, dun have much of a durian taste, but more of a milky one....texture is like our 'tao hway'....noting very fantastic...
